What's Your Project?
Project #85

Find a day when you don't have anything to do. No where to be. Nights are even better, especially in the fall. Get in the car and roll down the windows. Go somewhere, but don't think about how you're going to get there. Drive from your home to your work. Or leave work one night and try to get home. Don't take your normal route. Make random turns, take roads that you always pass but never turn down. Go into neighborhoods where you don't know anyone. Take as long as you can, trying really hard to get lost. While you drive really examine the places that you're passing. Play a CD or tape that you love and know all of the songs on. Too often we only take a few roads to get somewhere and the drive can get monotonous and boring. All that time that you're alone with yourself and you really only focus on getting to where you need to be at the time you need to be there. Perhaps you'll find that the journey somewhere is often more rewarding than the destination.

-------------------

I went to college in a town I wasn't very familiar with. My first year I couldn't have a car at school so I had to rely on the bus system. The buses travel specific routes and so each time I went to the mall I had to go the exact same way. The next year, when I did have a car, I found myself taking the bus routes to get to places, afraid that I would get lost and not get to where I needed to be. I got a job and found the quickest way to get there was the same as the bus route, so I took it back and forth every day.

One night after work I was really tired from a long shift, but the night was nice and I didn't really want to go home. I took a drive and listened to John Mayer's CD "Room For Squares" from beginning to end before finally finding my way home. It was so peaceful. After that I found other ways to get where I needed to be so that my life could be different each day even though the destination was the same.

I thought I was the only one who did that. Autum is the best time to do that, because the air is so crisp and fragrant. I love doing it in the winter too on cold clear evenings, all the windows down feeling the icy cold air.

Hmmm.. great idea, I gotta try that sometime. I love the site. I just found it today, one of those random google searches.
